102-54-5 - Application of Ferrocene:

Ferrocene has wide range of application in industry, aerospace, energy, environmental protection and other industries. Main applications are described below:
1. Fuel catalyst for rocket
Ferrocene can be used as a rocket fuel additive. Used as fuel catalyst for rocket (aeroplane) propellant, it can improve combustion speed by 1-4 times, lower the temperature of exhaust pipes, and avoid infrared chase.
2. Gasoline antiknock agent
Ferrocene used as a catalyst and gasoline anti-knock additive as an energy-saving, smoke-suppressing and combustion- supporting additive.
It can used for production of high-grade unleaded petrol in order to eliminate the contamination of the environment and poisoning to human body by discharge of fuel.
3. Diesel oil
2. Used in fuel oils such as diesel oil, heavy oil, light oil ect, It can eliminate smoke, save energy and reduce air pollution. Adding 0.1% Ferrocene to diesel oil can cut down the consumption of oil by 10--14%, eliminate smoke by 30--70%, and improve power by more than 10%.
4. Scale integrated circuit board
Ferrocene can be used for making large scale integrated circuit board, enhancing light sensitivity by four times, improving accuracy, simplifying technical process, and eliminating pollution.
5. Ferrocene can used as curing agent for rubber and silicone resin
6. Ferrocene can used as ultraviolet absorber, radiation absorbers, heat stabilizers, light stabilizers, and smoke-retardants.
7. For the chemical properties, Ferrocene is similar to aromatic compounds which is not prone to have addition reaction but prone to have electrophilic substitution reaction. It can also participate in metallization, acylation, alkylation, sulfonation, formylation and ligand exchange reaction, which can be used for production of derivative with a wide range of applications.

102-54-5 - Production Method:

Ferrocene (CAS: 102-54-5) is used as it is obtained by heating iron powder and cyclopentadiene in a nitrogen atmosphere at 300℃, or by reacting anhydrous ferrous chloride and cyclopentadiene sodium in tetrahydrofuran. it can also be obtained by electrolytic synthesis. ferrocene can be synthesized by using cyclopentadiene, ferrous chloride and diethylamine as raw materials. Under stirring, anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCl3) is added to tetrahydrofuran in stages, then iron powder is added, and heated and refluxed under nitrogen protection for 4.5h to obtain ferrous chloride solution. The solvent tetrahydrofuran is evaporated under reduced pressure to obtain a nearly dry residue. Under the cooling of ice bath, the mixture of cyclopentadiene and diethylamine is added, and the mixture is vigorously stirred for 6-8h at room temperature, the excess amine is evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue is extracted by reflux with petroleum ether. The extract is filtered while hot, and the solvent is evaporated to obtain crude ferrocene. Recrystallization with pentane or cyclohexane, or pure by sublimation method, that is, the yield of refined products is 73-84%.
