Sulfathiazole (CAS: 72-14-0) is an organosulfur compound that has been used as a short-acting sulfa drug, is a sulfonamide anti-infective agent, was introduced more than 25 years ago for the treatment of bacterial infections. The importance of sulfonamides has subsequently decreased as a result of increasing bacterial resistance and their replacement by antibiotics which are generally more active and less toxic. The sulfonamides are known to cause serious adverse effects. Sulfathiazole is a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic. It is still used in combination with sulfacetamide and sulfabenzamide for the treating vaginal infections and for disinfecting home aquariums.
