130-95-0 - Application:

Quinine ((-)-Quinine; Quinine Anhydrous) (CAS: 130-95-0) is the principal alkaloid of cinchona bark. Quinine is a stereoisomer of quinidine, which has similar antimalarial properties. Quinine is mainly used for the treatment and prevention of various malaria, medicinal use as its sulfate or hydrochloride.
Quinine is the drug of choice in the treatment of severe and complicated chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum malaria. It is a potent schizontocidal agent against all human plasmodial species. It is also gametocytocidal against P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae but not against P. falciparum. It is also useful for the treatment of non-severe chloroquineresistant cases.
Quinine is an anti-malaria agent and also a potassium channel inhibitor.
Clinically, Quinine is mainly used in patients with plasmodium vivax infections resistant to chloroquine. Quinine is also used for plasmodium interna and plasmodium falciparum. All medical uses are salts of quinine. The sulfate is for oral administration and the hydrochloride is for injection.
