7440-42-8 - Safety Instructions:

Safety Instructions: Toxic by ingestion and inhalation. The damage of central nervous system, stomach and intestinal stimulation, ig. boron poisoning, are caused by inhalation of boron. Eyes bear slight stimulation as well. Be handled with rubber gloves, a respirator and eye protection by wearing protective clothing.

7440-42-8 - Application:

1. Boron is widely used in glass enamel industry, aerospace industry, nuclear industry, metallurgical industry, electronics industry, medicine industry, ceramics industry and other sectors.
2. Raw material for the production of other borides. Boron is the important raw material for manufacturing high-purity halogenated boron and for a variety of borides. Boron and its compounds can also be used as the catalysts of some organic chemical reactions.
3. Natural Boron has a large neutron absorption cross section and can be directly used as a reactor control material. The thermal neutron absorption cross section of 10B(n,a)7Li reaction is large, and it can be used as a neutron absorber and shielding material for the reactor. Boron steel, boron carbide, borosilicate glass, and the like are used as control materials for various reactors in the form of rods, plates, aqueous solutions, and the like.
4. Addition to special alloys. Boron has also been used in the forms of compounds or as an additive in some special alloys and smelted steels.
5. Propellants in solid rockets. Boron can be used in high-energy fuels for solid rocket.
6. Boron is particularly active at high temperature, easy to react with nitrogen and oxygen, and is used as a degassing agent and an additive to improve the grain structure of metals in the metallurgical industry.
7. A small amount of boron is added as a dope to silicon transistor chips to facilitate or impede the flow of current over the chip. Many electronic devices depend on these types of doped-silicon semiconductors and transistors.
8. Boron is used to manufacture borosilicate glass and to form enamels that provide a protective coating for steel.
