8-Hydroxy-5-Nitroquinoline (5-Nitro-8-Quinolinol; Nitroxoline) (CAS: 4008-48-4) is a monohydroxyquinoline in which the hydroxy group is positioned at C-8 with a nitro group trans to it at C-5, is used as pharmaceutical intermediates, fungicides, etc. 8-Hydroxy-5-Nitroquinoline is an effective anti-microbial and anti-cancer agent. It is a urinary antibacterial agent with bioactivity against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms commonly susceptible to urethral infection. Nitroxoline is an antibiotic that has proven to be very effective at combating biofilm infections. Nitroxoline functions by chelating Fe2+ and Zn2+ ions from the biofilm matrix. 8-Hydroxy-5-Nitroquinoline can inhibit the activity of cathepsin B and play a role in resisting tumor in vivo and in vitro. 8-Hydroxy-5-Nitroquinoline was used in the synthesis of novel CO2-soluble 8-hydroxyquinoline chelating agents.
