103-63-9 - Application:

(2-Bromoethyl)benzene (2-Phenylethyl Bromide) (CAS: 103-63-9) is used as organic synthesis, pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediates. It is used in the synthesis of a variety of compounds, including fentanyl.
(2-Bromoethyl)benzene is used in the preparation of phenelzine by reacting with hydrazine. It is also used as a starting material to prepare various beta-phenethyl derivatives, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and fragrances. It finds application as a flame retardant.
(2-Bromoethyl)benzene is an important intermediate for the synthesis of high efficient brominated flame retardant polybrominated styrene, it is also commonly used in the preparation of intermediates in organic synthesis.

103-63-9 - Production Method:

(2-Bromoethyl)benzene is derived from the reaction of phenylethyl alcohol with hydrogen bromide. Phenyl ethanol was heated to 110℃, hydrogen bromide was slowly introduced, and the reaction was refluxed. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled and washed with water, 10% sodium carbonate solution and water in this order. After drying with anhydrous potassium carbonate and fractional distillation under reduced pressure, the 97-99℃. (2.0kPa) fraction was collected, and the yield was more than 90%.
