122-51-0 - Application:

Triethyl Orthoformate (TEOF) (CAS: 122-51-0), Colorless clear liquid; irritating odor. Highly flammable. Slightly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol, ether; decomposes in water.
Alkylating Reagents for Ester Synthesis; Novel Powerful N-Formylating Reagent; Formylation Reagents.
Triethyl Orthoformate is a useful organic synthesis reagent for acetylization, imidic ester formation, and activated aromatic species formation.A reagent useful for acetylization and imidic ester formation.
Triethyl Orthoformate is used in Bodroux-Chichibabin aldehyde synthesis to prepare an aldehyde with one carbon higher by reacting with Grignard reagent. It is also used in the electrophilic formylation of activated aromatic species such as phenol.
Used as pharmaceutical raw materials, it is the synthetic raw materials of antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine and quinquine. It is also used in the preparation of high polymers, photographic drugs, photosensitive materials, anti-Halo dyes, cyanine dyes and synthetic pesticides. Used to make other chemicals.
Triethyl Orthoformate has a variety of applications, including as a reagent in organic synthesis, for the preparation of chiral compounds, and as a catalyst for the formation of polymers. It is also used as a plasticizer, as a solvent for resins and cellulose acetate, and as a fuel additive.

122-51-0 - Safety Profile:

Triethyl Orthoformate is considered to be a hazardous chemical, and should be handled with appropriate safety precautions. Triethyl Orthoformate is highly flammable and should be stored away from heat and open flames. Contact with skin and eyes should be avoided. Inhalation of vapors can be irritating to the respiratory system and should be avoided.

Moderately toxic by ingestion. Mddly toxic by inhalation, skin contact, and subcutaneous routes. A skin and eye irritant. A very dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame; can react vigorously with oxidzing materials. To fight fire, use foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. See also ESTERS.

122-51-0 - Reactivity Profile:

Triethyl Orthoformate is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides.

122-51-0 - Health Hazard:

May cause toxic effects if inhaled or absorbed through skin. Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

122-51-0 - Fire Hazard:

HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water.

122-51-0 - Flammability and Explosibility:

Flammable, moderate fire risk.

122-51-0 - Flammability Hazard Characteristics:

In case of open flame, high temperature, flammable oxidant; Combustion stimulus smoke.

122-51-0 - Extinguishing Agent:

Dry powder, dry sand, carbon dioxide, foam, 1211 extinguishing agent.
