79-37-8 - Physical and Chemical Properties:

Colored fuming liquid with pungent odor. Water and ethanol can be vigorously decomposed, cooled to -12℃ that condensed into white crystalline blocks. Decomposition and evolution of carbon monoxide occurred at 60℃. Soluble in ether, benzene and chloroform, with corrosive and lacrimal.

79-37-8 - Application:

Oxalyl Chloride (CAS: 79-37-8) is a commonly used chlorinating reagent that can be prepared by the reaction of oxalic acid and phosphorus pentachloride.
Oxalyl Chloride is mainly used in the synthesis of pesticides and pesticide intermediates and for the synthesis of other organic chlorides.
Used pharmaceutically as raw materials for the synthesis of anti-biotics, and for the synthesis of highly potent herbicides in pesticide industry. It is also used as materials for the synthesis of chlorinated organic compounds.
Oxalyl Chloride is an intermediate of benzoylurea insecticides such as flufenuron and chlorpyrifos in pesticides. It is also an intermediate of sulfonylurea herbicides such as Metsulfuron-Methyl (CAS: 74223-64-6), Bensulfuron-Methyl (CAS: 83055-99-6) and Pyrazosulfuron-Ethyl (CAS: 93697-74-6), Triflumuron (CAS: 64628-44-0), Hexaflumuron (CAS: 86479-06-3), plant growth regulators, etc,. It is widely used.
Used as a military use of toxic gases. It is also a high quality acylating agent in the chemical industry such as polyamide, chemical luminescence agent, liquid crystal and other fields.

79-37-8 - Production Method:

Prepared by the reaction of anhydrous oxalic acid and phosphorus pentachloride. The preparation method is to obtain oxalyl chloride by reacting oxalic acid with phosphorus pentachloride. The reaction equation is shown in the figure. After phosphorus pentachloride and anhydrous oxalic acid are mixed uniformly, they are slowly heated to about 64℃. And reacted until almost no hydrogen chloride is released, and the obtained crude product is further subjected to rectification to obtain Oxalyl Chloride.
